در خراسان، رسمی به نام «چراغ برات» در سه شب باقی‌مانده تا نیمه شعبان، برای یادبود درگذشتگان، اجرا می‌شود. در این سه شب، خانواده‌ها به دیدار درگذشتگان خود در آرامستان‌ها می‌روند و برایشان خیرات می‌کنند. طبخ «روغن جوشی» و «حلوا»ی چراغ برات، بعلاوه روشن نگاه‌داشتن چراغی در خانه، از آداب این شب‌هاست. اجداد ما در ایران باستان، نیز چنین آیینی را برپا می‌داشتند؛ آن‌ها معتقد بودند در پنج روز پایان سال، ارواح رفتگانشان به زمین می‌آیند و به‌اصطلاح برای دیدار با عزیزانشان، برات یا چک آزادی می‌گیرند. این رسم اکنون در بسیاری از مناطق خراسان به شکل‌های مختلف انجام می‌شود.
In Khorasan (eastern Iran), a tradition called "Cheragh Barat" is observed during the three nights leading up to the 15th of Sha'ban in remembrance of the deceased. During these nights, families visit cemeteries to honor their departed loved ones and distribute food in their memory—an act known in Persian as Kheyrāt. Preparing traditional sweets such as Roghan-joushi and Halva, and keeping a lamp lit at home, are among the customs of these nights. Our ancestors in ancient Iran held a similar ritual, believing that during the last five days of the year, the souls of the dead would return to earth and symbolically receive a "Barat"— a letter of release or discharge, resembling a kind of spiritual bail— to visit their loved ones. Today, this tradition is still observed in many parts of Khorasan, though in various forms.
