Near the city of Sabzevar (Northeastern Iran), there is a village that people visit to pray for having children. The villagers believe that the Imamzadeh (a shrine of a descendant of an Imam) located there grants this specific wish. The only thing that needs to be done to have the wish fulfilled is to make a small fabric doll and place it in the shrine. The villagers also say that this act should be done with faith in God and the hope that He will bless them with a child.Key choices in the translation and why:“In the vicinity of Sabzevar” / “Near the city of Sabzevar” / “Just outside of Sabzevar”: These are all natural ways to say “اطراف شهر سبزوار” in English, depending on how formal or informal you want to sound.“journey seeking to fulfill their wish for children” / “destination for those hoping to have children” / “people travel to when they long to have children”: These options capture the idea of people making a trip with a specific intention, making it sound less like a casual visit and more like a pilgrimage of sorts.“Imamzadeh”: We keep “Imamzadeh” as it is the specific term for this type of religious shrine in Iran. It’s understood in English within the context of Islamic culture, similar to keeping terms like “mosque” or “minaret.” If you were writing for a completely uninitiated audience, you might briefly explain it as “a local shrine dedicated to a descendant of a Shia Imam.” However, for Digikala Mag’s audience, it’s likely the term will be understood or easily looked up.“grant this wish” / “answer their prayers for offspring” / “make this dream come true”: Variations on expressing “برآورده کردن حاجت,” offering different levels of formality and emphasis.“cloth doll” / “little cloth doll”: “عروسک پارچه‌ای” is simply “cloth doll.” Adding “little” can make it sound slightly more endearing and less formal, if appropriate for the tone.“place it within the Imamzadeh” / “leave it at the Imamzadeh”: Both work well. “Place it within” might sound slightly more respectful, while “leave it at” is a bit more casual.“hope in God and the belief that He will bestow a child upon them” / “faith in God and the hope that He will bless them with a child” / “hope in God and trust that He will bless them with a child”: These capture the sentiment of “امید به خداوند و عطا کردن فرزند به آن‌ها,” emphasizing the spiritual aspect of the practice. “Bestow,” “bless,” and “trust” offer slightly different nuances.
