نامگیر در باورهای مردم افغانستان موجودیست شبیه به جن که کار او تسخیر انسانهاست. نامگیر نام قربانی خود را سه بار صدا میزند. اگر آن انسان هر سه بار جواب " بله" بدهد، نامگیر او را تسخیر میکند.
به این صورت که نام انسان را از او میدزدد و به جای آن فرد زندگی میکند. در نتیجه فردِ تسخیرشده هیچ ارادهای از خود نخواهد داشت. نامگیر از طریق انسانِ تسخیرشده، اعمال بد و خشونتآمیز انجام میدهد.
بر اساس این باور، برخی از مردم افغانستان باور دارند که اگر فردی بدون دلیل با صدای بلند کلمه "بله" را به زبان بیاورد، احتمالا نامگیر او را صدا میزند، پس با عجله دست خود را جلوی دهان آن فرد میگیرند تا برای سومین بار " بله" را نگوید.

'Nām-Gir', according to Afghan people's belief, is a creature similar to a Jinn. This creature can possess a human body. It calls the victim's name three times, and if the person answers all three times with 'yes', Nām-Gir will possess them.
Whenever Nām-Gir possesses people, it steals their names and lives inside their bodies as them. The possessed people lose all control over their bodies, and Nām-Gir does horrible things while living inside them.
Some people believe that if someone says 'yes' out loud for no reason, Nām-Gir has called them. If this happens people cover their mouths so they won't say 'yes' three times.
