کبوده فرستادهای بود که تژاو برای جاسوسی، شبانه، به لشکر ایرانیان فرستاد.
وقتی خبر گذشتن ایرانیان از سد بلاشان و رسیدن آنها به گُروگرد رسید، تژاو که در گُروگرد جایگاه داشت، کبوده را که چوپان افراسیاب بود به سرککشی و جاسوسی مامور کرد تا به لشکر ایرانیان برود. کبوده به نزدیک لشکر ایرانیان رسید و مشغول تجسس بود که ناگهان اسبش شیههای کشید و بهرام گودرز از حضورِ بیگانهای در آن حوالی آگاه شد و تیری انداخت و به کمرگاه کبوده زد و او را از اسب فروانداخت. سپس، به بالای سر او رفت و کبوده از او زنهار خواست و گفت که فرستادهٔ تژاو بوده و اگر بخواهد میتواند راهنمای او در یافتن لشکر تژاو باشد. بهرام اما بیمعطلی با خنجر سر کبوده را برید و به پای لشکریان انداخت.
