در متون عجایب‌نامه از ماری می‌خوانیم که زیستگاه او در کشورهای جنوبی است. دو سر و دو بال دارد؛ بر پشت سرش موی دراز روییده است و نگاه‌کردن در چهره‌ی او سمی است. گفته می‌شود هر موجودی که به او نگاه کند، هلاک می‌شود. نقل است که روزی فردی سوار بر اسب با نیزه‌ی خود بر این مار زد تا او را بکشد؛ اما هم اسبش و هم خودش سیاه شدند و از بین رفتند.
In the texts of wonders (‘Aja’eb-nameh’), there is mention of a serpent said to dwell in southern lands. This creature has two heads and two wings, with long hair growing from the back of its head. Its face is so venomous that simply looking into it is deadly.It is said that any being who gazes upon it perishes.One tale recounts a man riding a horse who struck the serpent with his spear in an attempt to kill it. But both he and his horse turned black and perished.
