ضحاک، فرزند مرداس، به مدت هزار سال با ظلم و استبداد بر هفت کشور حکومت کرد. اما داستان حکومت ضحاک از جایی آغاز شد که با وسوسه‌های ابلیس، به مرگ پدرش رضایت داد. پس از این واقعه، ابلیس در هیئت آشپزی ماهر نزد ضحاک ظاهر شد و با طبخ غذاهایی از تخم‌مرغ و گوشت، او را مجذوب هنر خود ساخت. ضحاک، که از طعم لذیذ این خوراک‌ها به وجد آمده بود، خطاب به ابلیس گفت: «هرچه بخواهی انجام می‌دهم.» ابلیس در پاسخ گفت: «تنها اجازه بده تا شانه‌هایت را ببوسم.»
همین که ابلیس شانه‌های ضحاک را لمس کرد، ناپدید شد و از آن روز، دو مار از دو سوی شانه‌های ضحاک روییدند. پزشکان هرچه کردند نتوانستند این مارها را از میان بردارند تا اینکه بار دیگر، ابلیس در هیئت پزشکی حاذق نزد ضحاک آمد و گفت: «راه درمان تو این است که هر شب مغز دو جوان را خوراک مارها کنی؛ در این صورت، آنها آرام می‌گیرند و درد تو تسکین می‌یابد.»
در سوی دیگر، در ایران، جمشید که روزگاری پادشاهی مقتدر بود، بر اثر غرور، **فَرّه ایزدی** را از دست داد. مردم علیه او شوریدند و در جای‌جای ایران اعتراضات شکل گرفت. به مرور زمان، این گروه‌های معترض با یکدیگر متحد شدند و ضحاک را به پادشاهی برگزیدند. جمشید نیز نزدیک به صد سال آواره بود تا اینکه سرانجام، در کناره دریای چین یافت شد و به قتل رسید؛ او را از وسط به دو نیم کردند و دخترانش، شهرناز و ارنواز، به همسری ضحاک درآمدند.
با آغاز حکومت ضحاک، ظلم و تاریکی بر سرزمین‌ها سایه افکند و هر شب، دو جوان قربانی می‌شدند تا مغز آنها خوراک مارهای ضحاک گردد. در این میان، ارمایل و گرمایل تصمیم گرفتند تا به مطبخ سلطنتی راه یابند و طرحی برای نجات جوانان بریزند.
از آن پس ازمایل و گرمایل هر روز جان یک جوان را نجات دادند و در شاهنامه چنین آمده که نژاد کردها به همین جوانان رهایی‌بافته می‌رسد.
ضحاک همینطور به پادشاهی پر از ظلم و جور خود ادامه می‌داد تا اینکه چهل سال مانده به پایان فرمانروایی هزارساله‌اش یک شب خواب دید که جوانی با گرزی‌گاورسر به هنراه دو برادرش به کاخ او می‌آیند و او را از تخت به زیر می‌کشند.
ضحاک پس از مشورت با خوابگزاران دریافت که در آینده‌ای نه چندان دور پسری به نام فریدون به دنیا خواهد آمد که ضحاک پدر و گاوی که او از آن شیر می‌نوشیده را می‌کشد و در دوران جوانی به کاخ او حمله می‌کند و انتقام خون‌های ریخته شده را می‌گیرد. به خاطر همین سرتاسر هفت کشور را گشت تا فریدون را بیابد. در این مسیر آبتین، پدر فریدون و گاوه برمایه به دستور ضحاک کشته شدند اما فریدون به خاطر تلاش‌های مادرش فرانک زنده ماند.
ضحاک که پایانش را نزدیک می‌دید روزی بزرگان را گرد خود جمع کرد و به آنها محضری داد تا به نیک‌خواهی و عدالت‌جویی ضحاک گواهی دهند. در همین آن، کاوه‌ی آهنگر که پسرش قرار بود کشته شود و مغزش خوراک مارها گردد پا به کاخ گذاشت و فرزند خود را از ضحاک طلب کرد. ضحاک که چاره‌ای جز پذیرفتن خواسته‌ی کاوه پیش روی خود نمی‌دید فرزند را به کاوه پس داد و از او خواست که با امضا کردن نامه به مهربانی ضحاک گواهی دهد. اما کاوه بزرگان کاخ را ترسو خواند و محضر را پاره کرد و به بازار آمد و فریاد دادخواهی سرداد و همه را به سوی فریدون برد.
فریدون لشکری ساخت و به کاخ ضحاک یورش برد و بندهای جادوی ضحاک را از هم گسست و دختران را از شبستان ضحاک بیرون آورد و سر و تن شست.
شهرماز و ارنواز خواهران جمشید هم در میان دختران شبستان بودند و وقتی از هویت فریدون آگاه شدند ماجرای خود را بازگفتند و به او خبر دادند که ضحاک به جادوستان رفته تا بلکه با شستن تنش به خون از سرنوشتش رهایی یابد.
در این میان ضحاک با آگاهی یافتن از حضور فریدون در کاخ در زرهی تمام آهنی به ایوان کاخ خویش برمی‌گردد اما فریدون با گرزگاوسار خود بر کلاهخود ضحاک می‌کوبد و به دستور سروش او را در غاری عمیق در کوه دماوند می‌بندد چون اگر ضحاک را می‌کشت پلیدی سرتاسر هفت کشور را فرامی‌گرفت.
Zah’haak, the son of Mardaas, ruled the seven regions with tyranny for a thousand years. His reign began when he succumbed to Iblis’ temptations and consented to his father’s death. After Mardaas’ demise, Iblis, disguised as a masterful chef, approached Zah’haak and prepared sumptuous dishes made from eggs and meat. Enchanted by the flavors, Zah’haak exclaimed, *“I will do anything for you.”* Iblis replied, *“Just allow me to kiss your shoulders.”*
As soon as Iblis touched Zah’haak’s shoulders, he vanished. From that moment, two serpents emerged from both sides of Zah’haak’s shoulders. Despite the efforts of physicians, they could not be removed. Eventually, Iblis returned in the guise of a skilled doctor and proposed a gruesome cure: *“Each night, feed the serpents the brains of two young men. This will calm them and relieve your suffering.”*
Meanwhile, in Iran, Jamshid, once a mighty ruler, lost his **Farreh Izadi** due to his arrogance. His people rebelled, and protests erupted across the land. Over time, dissidents united and crowned Zah’haak as king. Jamshid, exiled for nearly a century, was eventually captured near the shores of China and was brutally slain—his body severed in two. His daughters, Shahrnaz and Arnavaz, were taken as Zah’haak’s wives.
With Zah’haak’s ascent, oppression and darkness engulfed the land. Each night, two youths were sacrificed to feed the monstrous serpents. Amidst this horror, two noble individuals, Armayel and Garmayel, infiltrated the royal kitchens and secretly saved one youth each day. According to the *Shahnameh*, the lineage of the Kurdish people traces back to these rescued youths.
Zah’haak’s reign continued until, forty years before the end of his thousand-year rule, he dreamt that a young warrior wielding a bull-headed mace, accompanied by two brothers, would storm his palace and overthrow him.
Upon consulting dream interpreters, Zah’haak learned that soon, a boy named Fereydoun would be born—one who would slay Zah’haak’s father and the sacred cow that nourished him, then rise in his youth to challenge Zah’haak’s throne and avenge the countless lives lost. Determined to avert his downfall, Zah’haak scoured the seven regions to find Fereydoun. In the process, he ordered the execution of Abtin, Fereydoun’s father, and the slaughter of the sacred cow, Barmaaye. Yet, through the efforts of his mother, Faranak, Fereydoun survived.
As his end approached, Zah’haak gathered the kingdom’s elders and coerced them into signing a decree attesting to his benevolence and justice. At that moment, Kaave the Blacksmith entered the court, demanding the release of his son, who had been chosen as a sacrifice for Zah’haak’s serpents. With no choice but to comply, Zah’haak freed Kaave's son and urged him to sign the decree as proof of his kindness. However, Kaave tore the document apart, denounced the courtiers as cowards, and stormed into the marketplace, rallying the people against Zah’haak and leading them to Fereydoun.
Fereydoun assembled an army and stormed Zah’haak’s palace, shattering the tyrant’s magical defenses and freeing the captive women. Among them were Shahrnaz and Arnavaz, Jamshid’s sisters, who, upon recognizing Fereydoun, recounted their story and informed him that Zah’haak had fled to the land of sorcerers in a desperate attempt to cleanse himself in blood and escape his fate.
Zah’haak, realizing Fereydoun’s presence in his palace, returned in full iron-clad armor. However, Fereydoun struck his bull-headed mace upon Zah’haak’s helmet, subduing him. Following the command of Soroush, he bound Zah’haak deep within a cave in Mount Damavand—for killing him outright would have unleashed an even greater evil upon the world.
