گستهم پسر نوذر شاه ایران بود که در زمان پادشاهی پدرش به همراه برادر خود توس از طرف شاه مامور شد تا به پارس برگشته تا خانوادهی شاهی را از آنجا به طرف کوه برند. بعد از کشته شدن قباد، قارن کینخواهار از پیش جنگید تا شب شد. شبهنگام به دهستان که خیمهگاه نوذر بود رفت و از کشته شدن برادرش قباد گفت و نوذر نمیداست از مرگ سام و نبود زال ناراحت باشد یا مرگ قباد. فردا شد و روز دوم جنگ هم آغاز شده تو لشکر وارد جنگ شدند و جوی خون به راه افتاد. قارن یکتنه میجنگید و پیش میرفت تا اینکه از قلب سپاه ایران نوذر به سمت افراسیاب رفت. جنگ تا شب به طول انجامید ولی لشکر ایران تلفات بیشتری داد و شب نوذر خسته و درمانده دو پسرش یعنی توس و گستهم را فراخوانده و پیششان نالید که پدرم از حملهی لشکر ترک و چین با من گفته بود. سپس به ایشان گفت: «باید به پارس روید و هر که در شبستان شاهیست را به زاوهکوه (رابهکوه) در البرز برید.» سپس گوشزد کرد که آنها پنهانی به آنجا روند تا مبادا گزندی بهشان وارد شود که اگر اینطور شود لشکر ایران با شنیدن کشته شدن دو پسر شاه از هم میپاشد.
Gostahm was Nowzar's(Iran's king) son. During Nowzar's reign, he was ordered by the king to go to Fars alongside his brother, Tous. They were ordered to move the royal family to the mountains. After Qobad's death, Gharen fought till night, looking for revenge. Then at nighttime, he left for Dehestan, where Nowzar's tents were placed. Gharen told him about Qobad's death. Nowzar became so heavy-hearted that he didn't know whether to mourn for Saam or Qobad, or be sad because of Zaal's absence. Then the second day of the battle started. The two armies met at the battlefield and rivers of blood flowed in the field. Gharen fought single-handededly and on his own, charging at the enemies. From the heart of Iran's army, Nowzar moved towards Afrasiab. The fight lasted till the night, and Iran's army had more casualties than the other. Weary and weak, Nowzar summoned his sons, Gostahm and Tous. He told them how his father had warned him about this attack. Then he ordered them to leave for Fars and take everyone in the royal seraglio to ZavehKuh(Zaveh Mount) at Alborz. He warned his sons that they should keep a low profile and move undercover; because if something happened to them, Iran's army would fall apart.
