کیقباد نخساین پادشاه کیانیان بود که از نژاد فریدون بود و صد سال حکومت کرد.
بعد از آنکه افراسیاب برادر خود، اغریرث را کشت پشنگ، پدر افراسیاب، با او چپ افتاد و گوش به پیغام افراسیاب نمیداد تا آنکه بعد از مرگ زَوْ و گرشاسپشاه دوباره تخت ایران بیپادشاه ماند پس پشنگ به افراسیاب دستور داد تا دوباره لشکر به ایران بکشد. بزرگان ایران چون از این آگاهی یافتند نزد زال رفتند و از او کمک خواستند. زال گفت حال من پیر شدهام ولی پسرم رستم هست و در جستجوی اسبی درخور او هستم. سپس پیش رستم رفت و اینها به وی گفت. تهمتن پذیرفت و به دنبال یافتن اسب رفت و هر چه گشت اسب شایستهای نیافت تا آنکه رخش را پیدا کرد و نزد زال آمد. پس از آن زال لشکر آراست و به تقابل افراسیاب رفت و دو لشکر در دو فرسنگی هم ایستادند. زال رو به همگان گفت موبد نشانی مردی از نژاد فریدون را داده که دارای فره ایزدیست سپس به رستم دستور داد تا به البرز کوه رفته و وی را بیاورد. رستم جوان رفت و مرد خوشرویی را زیر سایهی درختی دید و کاشف به عمل آمد که اون همان کیقباد است. کیقباد آمد ولی وقت بزم نداشت. دو لشکر ایران و توران با هم وارد جنگ شدند و قارن جنگاوری خود را به رخ دیگران کشید و رستم با دیدن رزمزنی قارن نزد پدرش زال رفت و نشانی افراسیاب ازو خواست. زال با آنکه مخالف رفتن رستم به سوی افراسیاب بود ولی نشانی وی را به پسرش داد و رستم به سوی افراسیاب شتافت. خلاصه اینکه رستم با افراسیاب جنگید و حتی او را از روی زین بلند کرد ولی لشکریان توران گرداگرد افراسیاب را گرفتند و دست رستم ازو کوتاه ماند. افراسیاب با دیدن اینها عقبنشینی کرد و اینگونه شد که به پشنگ گفت تنها چارهی ما اکنون صلح است چون ایران علاوه بر قارن رزمزن و کشواد لشکرشکن زرینکلاه حالا جوانکی از پشت زال و سام دارد که نامش رستم است. کیقباد صلح را پذیرفت و صد سال بدون جنگ از ره داد حکومت کرد.

Kay Kawad was the first king of the Kianian dynasty, who was a descendant of Fereydoun and ruled for one hundred years.
When Afrasiab killed Aqriras(his own brother), Pashang(their father) turned on him. He wouldn't pay attention to Afrasiab's messages. But when Zaw and Garshasp died, Iran's throne was left without a king again; Therefore, Pashang ordered Afrasiab to invade Iran once again. Iran's elders heard of their plan, so they went to Zaal and asked for his help. He said that since he was too old, he couldn't confront them, but he suggested his son(Rostam) instead. He told them that he was looking for a suitable horse for Rostam. Then Zaal went to Rostam and told him everything. Rostam agreed to fighting for Iran. So he left for his search for a horse. He looked everywhere, until he found Rakhsh. Then he went back to Zaal. Zaal gathered an army and left for the battlefield to confront Afrasiab. Their armies were six miles apart. Then, standing before everyone, Zaal said that Mobad had talked of a man with the divine glory(Khvarenah) who was of Fereydoun's blood. So he asked Rostam to leave for Alborz mountains and bring him. When Rostam was looking, he met a good-looking man who was resting under a tree. As it turned out, he was KayKawad. KayKawad arrived, but there was no time for celebrations. The two armies met at the battlefield. The war started. Gharen showed how good of a warrior he was. Seeing his skills in battle, Rostam went to Zaal and asked him where Afrasiab was. Although Zaal didn't want his son to fight Afrasiab, he gave Rostam his whereabouts. Rostam left for him. Long story short, Rostam reached Afrasiab and picked him up his saddle, but when he wanted to finish him, The Turanian army circled around their warlord. Hence, Rostam couldn't kill him. Seeing all these, Afrasiab retreated. Therefore, he told Pashang that the only choice left for them was to make peace with Iran; because not only Iran had Gharen The Warrior and Kashvad The Destroyer Of Troops, he now also had Rostam, the son of Zaal. KayKawad accepted the peace. Therefore he ruled with justice and righteousness for a hundred years, with no war.
