مهراب کابلی، پادشاه کابل، یکی از شخصیت‌های کلیدی در بخش حماسی شاهنامه است که نقشی حیاتی در تبار پهلوانان ایران ایفا می‌کند. مهم‌ترین نقش او این است که جد مادری رستم، بزرگترین قهرمان ایران، به شمار می‌رود.
با آنکه مهراب از نژاد ضحاک است و تباری اهریمنی دارد، شاهنامه او را پادشاهی توانا، باهوش و با درایت معرفی می‌کند. جایگاه او در داستان، ایجاد یک پیوند سرنوشت‌ساز میان خاندان سام (از طریق زال) و خاندان ضحاک (از طریق دخترش رودابه) است؛ پیوندی که در نهایت به تولد رستم می‌انجامد و مسیر حماسه‌ی ملی ایران را شکل می‌دهد.

Mehrab Kabuli, the King of Kabul, is a pivotal character in the epic section of the Shahnameh, playing a vital role in the lineage of Iran's heroes. His most important role is that of the maternal grandfather of Rostam, Iran's greatest hero.
Although Mehrab is descended from Zahhak and thus has a demonic lineage, the Shahnameh portrays him as a capable, intelligent, and wise king. His position in the story is to forge a fateful union between the House of Sam (through Zal) and the House of Zahhak (through his daughter, Rudabeh)—a union that ultimately leads to the birth of Rostam and shapes the course of Iran's national epic.
