زال فرزند سام و پدر رستم بود که از بدو تولد سپیدموی زاده شد. این پهلوان زابلی به دستان معروف بود. پس از زاده شدن زال، سام چون از نقص نوزاد آگاه گشت این اتفاق را ننگ پنداشت و فرمان داد تا نوزاد را در کوه البرز گم و گور کنند. دست بر قضا سیمرغ که در این کوه آشیان داشت زال را عریان و گریان یافت و با خود به لانه برد. بچه‌های سیمرغ با دیدن نوزاد شگفت‌زده شدند. زمان گذشت و زال پیش سیمرغ پرورش یافت و آوازه‌اش در جهان پیچید که جوانکی ابوالبشر پیش سیمرغ بزرگ شده. خبر به گوش سام رسید و وی پشیمان از کردار نسنجیده‌ی خود به کوه البرز رفت. مسیر بس ناهموار و دشوار بود. سیمرغ از آمدن سام آگاه شد پس پیش زال آمده تا وی را ببرد. زال پنداشت که سیمرغ از او سیر گشته. سیمرغ چنین پاسخ داد که جایگاه تو اینجا نیست و باید بروی. سپس چند پر از خود به او داد و گفت که هر زمان در تنگنا بود یکی از پرها بسوزاند تا پیش پایش آید. لحظه‌ی دل کندن فرارسید و سیمرغ زال را پیش سام برد و سام اشک‌ریزان وی را به آغوش کشید. سپس با هم به شهر آمدند و بزمی ساختند. زال که به شهر می‌آید سام عازم گرگساران می‌شود و ملک زابلستان را به وی می‌سپارد. زال در آن پهنه به این شهر و آن شهر می‌رود و در کابل دلداده‌ی دختر شاه کابل می‌شود و این آغازی بود بر عاشقانه‌ی زال و رودابه. پسری از خاندان نریمان و دختری از نژاد ضحاک.
زال ذر تمام بخش حماسی شاهنامه حضور فعال دارد و به خاطر راهنمایی هایش او را نماد خرد در شاهنامه دانسته اند.

Zaal was Saam's son and Rostam's father. He was born with white hair. He was known as Dastaan* Zaal. When Saam found out about his deficiency, he found it shameful and ordered him to be abandoned at Alborz mountains. Simurgh was wandering the mountains when she found the naked crying baby, and took him to her own nest. Her nestlings were amazed by seeing the human baby. Time passed and Zaal was raised by Simurgh. His reputation traveled everywhere and everyone heard that a human was raised by Simurgh. Saam also heard these. Regretting his decision, he left for the mountains to find his child. The path was difficult to pass. Simurgh saw them, sho she went back to Zaal to take him to Saam. Zaal first thought that Simurgh didn't want him anymore, but she told him of what she saw, and that his place wasn't with her. Then she gave him a few of her own feathers so that he could summon Simurgh if he was in trouble. The time came for them to say their goodbyes. Then Simurgh took Zaal to Saam. Seeing him, Saam held him in his arms and wept. Then he took him to town to celebrate. Then Saam left for GorgSaraan and left Zabulistan to Zaal. Zaal traveled the realm. When he was in Kabul, he fell for the king of Kabul's daughter. Thus began the love story of Zaal and Rudābeh; the story of a man of Nariman's dynasty, and a girl of Zah'haak's race. P.S. Dastaan has two meanings in persian. It both means strong and artful.
Zaal has an active presence throughout the entire epic section of the Shahnameh and is considered the symbol of wisdom in the epic due to his guidance.
