سمنگان شهری قدیمی واقع در جنوب شرقی ولایت مزارشریف امروزی بوده. در شاهنامه سمنگان شهری در مرز ایران و توران و جزو توران است. شاه سمنگان تنها در داستان رستم و سهراب حضور دارد و پدر تهمینه و به عبارتی پدربزرگ سهراب است. چنین نقل شده که رستم روزی برای شکار به مرز سمنگان رفت و پس از شکار خوابید و رخش را در مرغزار رها گذاشت. سوارانی تورانی به آنجا رفتند و رخش را رها یافتند پس اسب رستم را در بند کردند و با خود به شهر بردند. رستم که بیدار شد خبری از رخش نبود، رستم رد پای رخش را دنبال میکند و به سمنگان میرسد. خبر به پادشاه سمنگان میدهند که رستم آمده پس به دیدارش میرود و از چند و چون ماجرا آگاه میشود. پادشاه سمنگان به رستم در کاخ خود جای میدهد و رستم شب را در آنجا میگذارد. تهمینه دختر شاه سمنگان شبانه به بالین رستم میرود و این دو همراز یکدیگر میشوند. فردای آن روز شاه سمنگان نزد رستم آمده و به وی مژدهی پیدا شدن رخش را میدهد و رستم مانند باد به ایران برگشت.
Samangan was an ancient city, located in South-East of Mazar-i-Sharif. In The Book Of Kings, Samangan is a city in the borders of Iran and Turan. It's a part of Turan's realm. The King Of Samangan is only present in the story of Rostam and Sohrab. He is Tahmina's father, and therefore he is also Sohrab's grandfather. It is said that once, Rostam decided to go hunting. He chose Samangan's borders for his hunting ground. After hunting, he wanted to rest. He let Rakhsh loose and slept in a meadow. A group of Turanian riders found rakhsh, so they captured the horse and took it to the city. When Rostam woke up, he saw no sign of his horse. Following on their footsteps, he got to Samangan. The King of Samangan heard of his arrival, so he went to visit him. He asked him of the reason why Rostam was there. The king gave him a room in the palace to rest over the night. At nighttime, princess Tahmina met Rostam at his room. They felt for one another. The next day, The King of Samangan came to Rostam and told him that his horse had been found. Rostam jumped on his fast steed and left for Iran in a hurry. Verse: To Rostam came the worthy king Asked of his night and everything
