گودرز پسر کشواد از نژاد کاوه آهنگر بود که دلاوری‌ها و درایتش او را به یکی از باخردترین پهلوانان شاهنامه در دوره‌ی پهلوانی تبدیل کرده.
او پدر گیو و بیژن و رهام و هجیر و... است و خاندان گودرزیان بعد از خاندان نریمان مهمترین خاندان پهلوانان شاهنامه هستند.
گودرز هفتاد پسرش را در جریان جنگ‌های ایران و توران برای کین‌خواهی خون سیاوش از دست می‌دهد.
گمان‌ها چنان می‌رود که خاندان گودرز تجلی پادشاهان اشکانی در شاهنامه بوده‌اند که با آنکه خبری از این سلسله در داستان‌های شاهنامه نیست و فردوسی می‌گوید جز نام از آنها چیزی نشنیده‌است، به داستان‌های شاهنامه راه یافته اند.

Goudarz was Kashwad’s son, and he was from Kave the Blacksmith’s
dynasty. His bravery and wisdom made him one of the most far-sighted champions
in the Era of the Champions, in The Book of Kings. He was the father of Giv,
Bijan, Roham, and Hojir. The House of Goudarz alongside with House of Nariman
are some of the most important houses in The Book of Kings. Goudarz lost seventy
of his sons during the wars between Iran and Turan, which had taken place to
avenge Siavash’s death. It is believed by some that The House of Goudarz are the
same as The Parthian Empire in the persian history. Altough Ferdowsi says that he
hasn’t heard of the Partians, and that there is no direct sign of them in The Book of
Kings, they have somehow found their way into these epic stories.
