هیربَد پردهدار (حاجب) شبستان (حرمسرا) کیکاووس بود که به دستور او با سیاوش همراه شد تا
او را به شبستان برد. برای فهم بهتر فضای داستان این نکته را باید در نظر داشتهباشیم که ساختار
شبستانها به این شکل بوده که هر کسی اجازهی ورود به آن را نداشته و اگر به دستور پادشاه یا بانوی
اول شبستان اجازهی ورود پیدا میکرد، حاجب با آن فرد همگام میشده و تا درگاه شبستان میآمده و
پرده را کنار میزده تا وی وارد شود. همچنین حاجبها به دلیل دسترسیشان به شبستان شاهی همیشه
از معتمدین انتخاب میشدهاند و نقش رابط میان بانوان شبستان با دیگر اشخاص دربار را داشتهاند. برای
همین است که هر بار در شاهنامه حرف از سیاوش و شبستان میشود ما هیربد را میبینیم.

Hirbad was the chamberlain of KayKavus’s seraglio(harem) who was
ordered by KayKavus himself to accompany Siavash towards the harem. In order
to understand this story better, we must understand the atmosphere in which the
story takes place; the harems’ doors weren’t open to everyone, and if a person was
allowed by the king or the first lady of the harem, a chamberlain would be
appointed with the task of accompanying the person towards the harem, and open
the courtains for them. Moreover, because of their access to the king’s harem, they
were always chosen from reliable persons. Somehow, they were like a bridge
between the ladies and the others outside of the harem. And that’s why when one
tells the story of Siavash and the harem, Hirbad is always there.
