شغاد برادر ناتنی رستم بود که با همدستی شاه کابل رستم و رخش و زواره را به کشتن داد.
شغاد از مادری کنیز به دنیا آمد و در کودکی به نزد شاه کابل فرستاده شد. وقتی به جوانی رسید به همسری دختر شاه کابل درآمد. شاه کابل قصد آن داشت تا از پرداخت باج و خراج به خاندان رستم سرباز زند. به همین خاطر، با شغاد نقشهای کشیدند تا شغاد به زابل رفته و رستم به جنگ با شاه کابل برانگیزد. از آنطرف شاه کابل در شکارگاه چالههای بسیار کند و در آنهای نیزههای دراز کاشت و روی آن را پوشاند تا شغاد رستم را به بهانهی شکار به آنجا برد تا بلکه در دام بیفتد.
شغاد چنین کرد و نقشه عملی شد و رستم با رخش در دام افتادند و به شدت زخمی شدند. در آخرین لحظه رستم از شغاد خواست که تیر و کمانی به او بدهد تا مبادا خوراک جانوران درنده شود. شغاد خوشخیال تیر و کمان را به تهمتن داد و رستم در همان لحظه انتقام خون خودش را گرفت.

Shaqad was the half-brother of Rustam, who, in treacherous confluence with the King of Kabul, conspired to bring fate's cruel hand upon Rustam, Rakhsh, and Zavareh. Born of a slave woman, Shaqad was sent to the court of the King of Kabul in his youth. As he blossomed into manhood, he wed the daughter of the King.
The cunning King devised a plot to evade the tribute owed to the house of Rustam. Together, he and Shaqad schemed for Shaqad to venture into Zabol, inciting Rustam to rise against the King of Kabul. In the hunting grounds, the King prepared treacherous pits, cunningly concealed, into which he planted long spears, with the hope that Shaqad would lure Rustam there under the guise of a hunting excursion.
So it unfolded; Shaqad led Rustam into the trap, and thus, the great hero and his trusty steed fell into the snare, grievously wounded. In the final moments of his strength, Rustam pleaded with Shaqad for a bow and arrow to prevent becoming prey for the animals that lurked around. In a moment of naive hope, Shaqad handed the faithful weapons to Rustam, only to have Rustam seize that fateful instant to exact vengeance for his blood.
