بهمن بزرگترین پسر اسفندیار و ششمین پادشاه دودمان کیانیان بود که شصت حکومت کرد.
بهمن در دوران پیش از پادشاهی کارکرد پیامرسان معتمد پدرش را دارد (همچون نوذر در زمان پادشاهی پدرش منوچهر). بهمن در داستان رستم و اسفندیار در نوجوانی همراه با پدرش به سیستان میرود. نخستین پیام اسفندیار را بهمن به رستم میرساند.
در نبرد میان رستم و اسفندیار، رویینتن وصیت کرد که رستم بهمن را پیش خود بپرورد و رستم چنین میکند.
بهمن در زمان پادشاهی خود پس از مرگ رستم به سیستان یورش میبرد تا انتقام خود پدرش را از خاندان سیستان بگیرد. فرامرز پسر رستم به مقابله برمیخیزد اما راه به جایی نمیبرد. بهمن فرامرز را میکشد و زابل را به آتش میکشد و زال را اسیر میگیرد. در نهایت با وساطت پشوتن بهمن زال را رها میکند.

Bahman, the illustrious firstborn of Esfandiyar, and the sixth sovereign of the mighty Kayanian dynasty, wielded the scepter for sixty grand years. Before ascending to his throne, Bahman held the esteemed role of his father’s trusted messenger, much like Nowzar during the reign of his father Menouchehr. In the grand saga of Rostam and Esfandiyar, the valiant Bahman journeyed with his father to the fabled land of Sistan in his youth, where he delivered Esfandiyar's first message to the legendary Rostam.
Amidst the epic confrontation between Rostam and Esfandiyar, the invincible hero bestowed a solemn charge: that Rostam would rear Bahman as his own, a promise that the mighty warrior faithfully upheld.
In the twilight of Rostam’s reign, Bahman, driven by vengeance for his fallen father, unleashed his wrath upon Sistan to seek retribution against its noble house. Framarz, the valiant son of Rostam, rose to challenge him, yet his endeavors bore no fruitful outcome. With overwhelming might, Bahman struck down Framarz, laying waste to Zabul and capturing Zal in the flames of fury. In the end, through the wise intercession of Peshotan, Bahman chose to release Zal from his bonds, honoring the valor and lineage of heroes.
