اغریرث پسر پشنگ و برادر افراسیاب بود و شاید بتوان گفت از محبوبترین شخصیتهای شاهنامه است و مرگ او یکی از غمبارترین مرگهاست. در ابتدای زمانی که پس از مرگ منوچهر و به تخت نشستن پسرش، نوذر، پشنگ شاه توران فرصت را غنیمت شمرد تا به ایران هجوم آورد یکی از مخالفان این جنگ اغریرث رهنمای بود و حرفش این بود که درست است منوچهر مرده ولی ایران هنوز پهلوانانی همچون قارن و گرشاسب و بسیاری را در چنته دارد ولی پشنگ حرف او نشنید و سپهداری به افراسیاب داد تا به ایران حمله کند. در ابتدای جنگ پیروزی با توران همراه بود و آنها نوذر را با هزار دویست همراه اسیر گرفتند. سپس افراسیاب شماساس و خزبران را سیستان فرستاد تا در غیاب زال که به سوگ پدرش سام در گورابد/گوراب نشسته بود آنجا را بگیرد ولی با حیلت و چارهی مهراب در کار لشکر شماساس شکست افتاد و شماساس عقبنشینی کرد. سپس شماساس با قارن مواجه شد و آنجا هم با چند تن پا به فرار گذاشت ولی تقریبا تمام لشکرش کشته شدند. افراسیاب چون از این آگاه شد نوذر را پیش خود آورد و گردن وی بزد. دیگر اسیران دست به دامن اغریرث شدند و گفتند این افراسیاب چندی دیگر تمام ما را همچون نوذر خواهد کشت. پس اغریرث در پی چاره شد و از افراسیاب خواست تا آن اسیران با خود ببرد و در غاری زندانی کند. افراسیاب پذیرفت و آنان به ساری شدند. پهلوانان ایران از مرگ نوذر و همراه شدن اسیران با اغریرث که آگاه شدند به او پیام فرستادند که ای مرد نیکنام افراسیاب به حرفش اعتباری نیست و هر آن ممکن است از بهر تاج و تخت و کلاه بسیاری را بکشد و رای درست آنست که اینها را به ایرانیان بسپارد. اغریرث در جواب گفت اگر من چنین کنم افراسیاب با من از در دشمنی وارد میشود و این آشکاری درست نیست ولی میتوان چارهای کرد و آن اینست که گر زال به نزدیکی ساری با لشکری برای آتشبس بیاید آمل را خالی کرده و بازمیگردم و اسرا به وی میسپارم. پس زال را آگهی دادند و او با لشکری از زاولستان به آنجا رفت و اغریرث چون از این آگاه شد با لشکرش آنجا را ترک کرد و اسیران را بگذاشت. ایرانیان از این شاد شدند ولی وقتی افراسیاب از این آگاه شد اغریرث را پیش خواند و گفت: «این چه بود که کردی؟ کین آنان که در این جنگ کشته شدند را چه میکنی؟» اغریرث در جواب گفت: «این درست نیست که خون هر که در دسترس است بریزی و از مکافات آن نترسی.» افراسیاب از شنیدن حرفها خشمگین شد و با شمشیر برادر خودش، اغریرث، را به دو نیم کرد.
Aqriras was Pashang's son and Afrasiab's brother. We could say that he was the most popular character of The Book Of Kings. His death is one the most depressing deaths in the Book. When Manouchehr died and Nowzar was throned as the king, Pashang wanted to take his chance and attack Iran. But Aqriras The Guide didn't agree. He believed that although Manouchehr was dead, on the other hand, Iran had many champions such as Gharen, Garshasp, and many others. But Pashang didn't care for his advice and ordered Afrasiab to invade Iran as Turan's warlord. In the beginning, victory belonged to Turan, and they captured Nowzar along twelve hundred of his men. Then Afrasiab sent Shamasas and Khazabran to take over Sistan in Zaal's absence( he had gone to Gurab to mourn Saam's death). Mehrab's wisdom bought them enough time for Zaal to come back. Therefore, their plan failed and Shamasas retreated. Running away, Shamasas faced Gharen, and lost more of his troops. But he managed to get away again, but with less men. When Afrasiab heard of his failure, he summoned Nowzar and cut his head off. Other prisoners who were captivated by Afrasiab, turned to Aqriras. They asked him to save them so that Afrasiab wouldn't kill them like he killed Nowzar. Looking for a way to save the prisoners, Aqriras asked Afrasiab to let him take them to a cave. Afrasiab accepted. Therefore, Aqriras took the prisoners to Sari. When the Iranian Champions heard of Nowzar's death and how Aqriras had taken the prisoners to Sari, they wrote to him. In the letter they said that they didn't trust Afrasiab to be a man of his word. And that they believed Afrasiab would kill anyone to have a throne. They asked Aqriras to give the prisoners to Iranians. In their answer, Aqriras said that it wouldn't be wise to do all this, otherwise Afrasiab would be suspicious. But he said that the only way for them is to tell Zaal to come to Sari with an army for truce. He said that if Zaal comes, I would leave Amol and the prisoners to Zaal. So they informed Zaal about this plan, and Zaal left Zabulistan for Sari. When Aqriras heard that Zaal was near, he let the prisoners and left the city. Iranians were joyful, but when Afrasiab heard of this, he summoned Aqriras... Afrasiab said to his brother: Why did you do so? Many died for this. It's not right to kill, and not fear justice. Aqriras replied. Hearing these words, Afrasiab lost his mind. By the swing of his sword, he cut Aqriras in half.
