قارن پسر کاوه بود که از زمان فریدون یکی از سپهسالاران ایران شد.
شاید بتوان گفت قارن اولین پهلوان در شاهنامه است که در آن نقش مهمی ایفا میکند و از این نگاه شناخت این شخصیت حائز اهمیت است. نخستین جایی که از قارن در شاهنامه نام برده میشود در میانهی داستان کین ایرج است. هنگامیکه ایرج به دست دو برادر دیگرش سلم و تور کشته میشود و ملک ایران بیوارث میماند. از نژاد ایرج پسری مانده بود منوچهر نام که به محض ورود انتقام خون ایرج را میگیرد و کار سلم و تور تمام میکند. در طی این انتقام، قارن سپهدار منوچهر بود. قارن به همراه منوچهر از دو جهت به لشکر تور حمله میکنند. منوچهر دخل تور را میآورد و قارن انگشتر تور را از منوچهر میگیرد. سلم میخواست به دژ آلانان پناه ببرد. قارن شبانه به تعقیب سلم به دژ آلانان رفت و با نشان دادن انگشتری تور، خود را فرستادهی تور خواند و به داخل دژ رفت. چون فردا شد قارن از بام دژ درفش سفیدرنگ را برافراشت و لشکرش که در نزدیکی دژ کمین کرده بود به دژ هجوم آوردند و دژ آلانان را تصرف کردند. قارن در طول داستان شاهنامه در زمان پادشاهی نوذر و کیقباد هم حضور موثر دارد. قارن فرزند کاوه آهنگر است و از آن به عنوان شاه ری یاد شده. نام کارَن از دو جزء کار به معنی کارزار و رزم است و صفت نسبت (فتحه + نون) است که در کنار هم به معنای جنگجو است. چو شب روز شد کارن رزمخواه/درفشی برافراشت چون گرد ماه(ص۱۴۷،بیت۹۳۷) * سپهدار چون قارن رزمخواه/چو شاپور نستوه پشت سپاه(ص۱۳۲،بیت۶۸۴)

Qaren/Karan, the son of Kaave, became one of Iran's commanders starting from the time of Fereydoun.
We could say that probably Karan is the first champion of The Book Of Kings. He has an important role in the book and therefore it is crucial to know him. The first time that he is mentioned is in the middle of the Iraj's vengeance's story; when Iraj was murdered by the hands of his two brothers, Salm and Tur, and the kingdom of Iran was left without a king. Of Iraj's race, a son named Manouchehr left to live to avenge his death. He had his revenge when he first appeared in The Book Of Kings. During the course of the revenge's story, Karan was one of Manouchehr's warlords. He attacked Tur's army along side Manouchehr. They attacked him at two different fronts. Manouchehr finished Tur. Karan took Tur's ring from Manouchehr. Salm wanted to retreat to Alanan Fort. Karan, chasing Salm, went to the fort and showed the ring, to say that he was one of Tur's messengers. They let him in. The next day, he went to the fort's tower to show a white flag to his army which were ambushing near the fort. So they attacked and captured the fort. In The Book Of Kings, Karan also has an important role in Nowzar's and Kay-Qobad's reigns. He is Kaveh's son, and he is mentioned as the king of Rey. His name Karan means warrior.
