اسفندیار پسر گشتاسپشاه بود که در «داستان رستم و اسفندیار» به دست رستم کشته شد.
در «داستان جنگ گشتاسپ با ارجاسپ»، زمانی که شاه توران از غیبت گشتاسپ بهره جست و به ایران تاخت، اسفندیار به مقابله با سپاه او برخاست که در نهایت به فرار ارجاسپ از اسفندیار انجامید.
در «داستان هفتخوان اسفندیار»، او برای رهایی خواهرانش همای و بهآفرید راهی «روییندژ» شد. او در این مسیر از هفت آزمون دشوار، از جمله نبرد با گرگ، شیر، اژدها و زن جادوگر و... گذر کرد و با پشت سر گذاشتن آنها خود را به دژ رساند.
در «داستان رستم و اسفندیار»، گشتاسپ به شرطی پادشاهی را به اسفندیار وعده داد که او رستم را به بند کشیده و به دربار آورد. اسفندیار به سیستان رفت و از رستم خواست که تسلیم شود، اما رستم نپذیرفت. پس از آنکه نبرد رخ به رخ آن دو به طول انجامید و اسفندیار رویینتن با هیچ سلاحی گزند نمیدید، رستم با راهنمایی سیمرغ تیری از چوب درخت گز ساخت و به چشمان اسفندیار زد و او را از پای درآورد.

In the saga of the battle between Goshtasp and the vile Arjaasp, when the king of Turan seized the opportunity of Goshtasp's absence to invade Iran, Esfandiyar rose to confront his army. This heroic engagement ultimately forced Arjaasp into a desperate retreat from the valiant Esfandiyar.
Within the epic narrative of the Seven Labors of Esfandiyar, he embarked on a perilous quest to rescue his sisters, Homay and Behafarid, journeying towards the fabled Rouein Fort. Along this treacherous path, he faced seven harrowing trials, battling ferocious wolves, fearsome lions, a fearsome dragon, and a wicked sorceress, among others. His indomitable spirit allowed him to conquer these challenges and reach the fortress.
In the tale of "Rustam and Esfandiyar," King Goshtasp promised Esfandiyar the throne, but only if he could capture Rustam and bring him to court. Esfandiyar journeyed to Sistan, beseeching Rustam to yield, yet Rustam steadfastly refused. After a prolonged face-to-face duel, where Esfandiyar, invulnerable and impervious to all weapons, seemed unconquerable, Rustam was guided by the wise Simorgh. He fashioned an arrow from the wood of a sedge tree, striking Esfandiyar in his eyes, ultimately putting an end to the legendary hero.
