جاماسپ وزیر گشتاسپ بود که در ستاره‌شناسی و پیشگویی سررشته داشت.
او در داستان‌های شاهنامه نقش مشاور بلندپایه‌ترین وزیر او را داراست. در جنگ گشتاسپ با ارجاسپ پیش از آنکه جنگ آغاز شود جاماسپ وقایعی که اتفاق خواهد افتاد را پیشگویی می‌کند. در این جنگ بسیاری از پهلوانان ایران کشته شدند که از آنها می‌توان به زریر برادر گشتاسپ و گرامی پسر جاماسپ اشاره کرد.
جاماسپ در داستان رستم و اسفندیار در طالع اسفندیار نظر می‌کند و می‌فهمد که مرگ اسفندیار در سیستان رخ خواهد داد ولی گشتاسپ با آگاه شدن از آن تجدید نظر نکرد و اسفندیار را به کام مرگ فرستاد.

Jaamaasp, the esteemed advisor of Goshtasp, was a master of astrology and prophecy. In the grand tales of the Shahnameh, he stands as the trusted counselor to the highest minister of the realm. As war loomed between Goshtasp and Arjaasp, Jaamaasp foresees the dire events yet to unfold before the clash of swords begins. In this fierce battle, many champions of Iran fell, among them Zareer, the brother of Goshtasp, and Gerami, the son of Jaamaasp.

In the saga of Rostam and Esfandiyar, Jaamaasp gazes into the stars to discern the fate of Esfandiyar. He uncovers the grim truth: the demise of Esfandiyar shall take place in Sistan. Yet, despite this foreboding knowledge, Goshtasp does not waver and sends Esfandiyar forth to face his doom.
