کتایون دختر قیصر روم، همسر گُشتاسپ و مادر اسفندیار بود.
نام کتایون تا زمانی که در دربار قیصر بود ناهید بود اما گشتاسپ او را کتایون میخواند.
او زمانی که به بلوغ رسیدهبود یک شب در خواب دید که در مراسم همسرگزینی دسته گل را به گُشتاسپ میدهد و او را به عنوان شوهر خود انتخاب میکند. فردای آن روز قیصر روم مراسمی ترتیب داده و همهی مردان روم را دعوت میکند تا کتایون از میان آنها یک نفر را برگزیند ولی کتایون هر چه گشت مرد مورد نظرش را نیافت.
از آنطرف زمانی که خبر همسرگزینی کتایون به گوش دهقانی رسید که گشتاسپ پیش او زندگی میکرد به گشتاسپ پیشنهاد کرد که به آن مراسم برود. گشتاسپ در مراسم حاضر شد و کتایون با دیدنش وی را شناخت و دسته گل را به او داد. قیصر که از این اتفاق خشمگین بود خواست تا هر دوی آنها را بکشد اما اسقف اعظم روم او را از این کار بازداشت چون آن را مغایر با آداب مراسم میشمرد. قیصر در پاسخ آنها را از خود طرد کرد و کتایون با فروختن زیورآلات و یک سنگ یاقوت پولی دست و پا کرد و زندگی را با گشتاسپ آغاز کرد.
کتایون در ابتدای داستان رستم و اسفندیار تمام تلاشش را کرد تا اسفندیار را از مقابله با رستم بازدارد. او به اسفندیار گفت که پس از گشتاسپ پادشاهی خواهی نخواهی به او میرسد و هماکنون او هر آن چه یک پادشاه باید داشتهباشد را دارد اما حرفهایش بر اسفندیار اثری نکرد و شد آنچه شد.

Katayoun, the daughter of the Caesar of Rome, was the wife of Goshtasp and the mother of Esfandiar.
When she reached maturity, she had a dream one night in which she saw herself presenting a bouquet of flowers to Goshtasp in a bride-selection ceremony, choosing him as her husband. The next day, the Caesar of Rome organized an event, inviting all the men of Rome so that Katayoun could select her chosen one. However, no matter how much she searched, she could not find the man she had envisioned.
Meanwhile, news of Katayoun’s bride-selection reached a farmer with whom Goshtasp had been living. The farmer suggested that Goshtasp attend the ceremony. Goshtasp appeared at the event, and as soon as Katayoun saw him, she recognized him and handed him the bouquet. The Caesar, furious at this turn of events, wished to kill them both, but the Archbishop of Rome intervened, preventing him, as such an act would go against the customs of the ceremony. In response, the Caesar banished them, and Katayoun, selling her jewelry and a ruby stone, gathered enough money to start a new life with Goshtasp.
Later, at the beginning of the tale of Rostam and Esfandiar, Katayoun did everything she could to prevent Esfandiar from confronting Rostam. She reminded him that, after Goshtasp, kingship would inevitably come to him, and that he already possessed everything a king should have. However, her words had no effect on Esfandiar, and fate unfolded as it did.
