زریر پسر لهراسپ شاهزادهای ایرانی بود که در جنگ ایران و توران در زمان پادشاهی گشتاسپ به دست بیدرفش تورانی کشته شد.
زریر در زمان پادشاهی پدرش لُهراسپ فرد مورد اعتماد او بود. او در این داستان در واقع رابط میان برادرش گشتاسپ و لهراسپ است. زمانی که گشتاسپ از ایران به سوی هند گریخت زریر به دنبال او رفت و در کابل با وی ملاقات کرد و او را به ایران بازگرداند. وقتی گشتاسپ برای بار دوم ایران را ترک کرد و در دستگاه قیصر روم به سپهداری رسید، قیصر ایران را تهدید به جنگ کرد. لهراسپ پس از پرسوجوی علت از قالوس، فرستادهی قیصر، دانست که سپهدار قیصر کسی جز گشتاسپ نیست پس زریر را با لشکر و تاج و تخت به سوی قیصر فرستاد. زریر در لباس فرستاده به نزد قیصر رفت اینطور وانمود کرد که گشتاسپ غلامی از دربار لهراسپ بودهاست و گشتاسپ که از دیدن دوبارهی برادرش شادان بود هیچ نگفت و سپس به ملاقات زریر آمد. در این هنگام ایرانیان تاج و تخت آراستند و گشتاسپ را به تخت نشاندند. در آخر، قیصر با فهمیدن ماجرا به گشتاسپ تعظیم کرد و ابراز پشیمانی کرد.
زریر در زمان پادشاهی برادرش به مقام سپهداری رسید. در این دوران زرتشت ظهور کرد و گشتاسپ دین او را پذیرفت و پس از مدتی از باج دادن به ارجاسپ، پادشاه توران و چین سرباز زد. این رفتار به مذاق ارجاسپ خوش نیامد و از او خواست که به زرتشت پشت کند وگرنه با لشکری انبوه به ایران یورش میکند. بر اثر این اتفاق جاماسپ، وزیر گشتاسپ، به همراه اسفندیار و زریر گرد هم آمدند و نامهای در جواب ارجاسپ نوشتند و آمادگی خود را برای جنگ به او اعلام کردند.
دو لشکر که به هم رسیدند گشتاسپ از جاماسپ که در ستارهشناسی زبانزد بود از سرنوشت جنگ پرسید و جاماسپ در جواب گفت بسیاری از بزرگان ایران از جمله زریر در جنگ کشته میشوند ولی شاه توران با دیدن زور و جنگاوری اسفندیار عقب مینشیند و اینگونه ایران پیروز خواهد شد. گشتاسپ از شنیدن این سخنان از هوش رفت و تصمیم داشت کسانی که جاماسپ نام برده را به جنگ نفرستد اما جاماسپ در جواب گفت که تقدیر را نمیتوان تغییر داد. پس جنگ آغاز شد و بزرگان ایران یکی پس از دیگری کشته شدند تا اینکه نوبت به زریر رسید. زریر در این جنگ بسیاری سرداران تورانی را کشت ولی دست آخر به دست بیدرفش که در گوشهای کمین کردهبود به ضرب نیزهای زهرآگین کشته شد.

Zarir, the son of Lohrasp, was a valiant Iranian prince who, during the epic conflict between Iran and Turan under the reign of Goshtasp, met his tragic end at the hands of the Turanian warrior Biderafsh. In the era of his father Lohrasp's sovereignty, Zarir was his most trusted confidant. Within this tale, he served as the bridge between his brother Goshtasp and their father, Lohrasp. When Goshtasp fled from Iran to India, Zarir pursued him, eventually meeting him in Kabul and guiding him back to their homeland.
Upon Goshtasp's second departure from Iran, where he rose to a general's rank in the court of Caesar, the Caesar threatened war upon Iran. Lohrasp, upon inquiring about this menace from Qalus, a messenger of the Caesar, discovered that the general was none other than Goshtasp himself. Thus, he dispatched Zarir, adorned with an army, crown, and throne, to confront the Caesar. Cloaked as a messenger, Zarir approached the Caesar, pretending that Goshtasp had been but a humble servant in Lohrasp's court. Overjoyed at seeing his brother again, Goshtasp remained silent, leading to a meeting between them. In that moment, the Iranians adorned their throne and placed Goshtasp upon it. Ultimately, upon uncovering the truth, the Caesar paid homage to Goshtasp, expressing his regret.
During the reign of his brother, Zarir ascended to the esteemed position of general. It was in this era that Zoroaster appeared, and Goshtasp embraced his teachings. After some time, he refused to continue paying tribute to Arjaasp, the king of Turan and China. Arjaasp was displeased by this defiance and demanded that Goshtasp renounce Zoroaster, threatening to unleash a vast army upon Iran if he did not comply. In response, Jamaasp, Goshtasp’s minister, alongside Esfandiyar and Zarir, gathered to compose a letter to Arjaasp, proclaiming their readiness for war.
As the two armies converged, Goshtasp sought counsel from Jamaasp, renowned for his mastery of astronomy, about the war's fate.
Jamaasp foretold that many of Iran's noble warriors, including Zarir, would fall in battle, yet upon witnessing Esfandiyar's might and valor, the king of Turan would retreat, leading to Iran's victory. Hearing this, Goshtasp was struck down with despair, intending to spare those Jamaasp had named from combat. However, Jamaasp insisted that fate was unalterable. Thus, the war commenced, and one by one, the Iranian nobles were slain until finally, it was Zarir's turn. In battle, Zarir felled many Turanian commanders, yet ultimately fell himself, struck down by the poisoned spear of Biderafsh, who lay in wait in the shadows.
