زردهُشت یا زرتشت بر پایهی شاهنامه در زمان پادشاهی گشتاسپ ظهور میکند و دین بِهی (زرتشتی) را به پادشاه ایران عرضه میکند.
پس از آنکه گشتاسپ بعد از بازگشت از روم به تخت نشست، زرتشت به نزد او رفت و گشتاسپ دین او را پذیرفت و تمام بزرگان از جمله زریر و لُهراسپ پیر به دین او درآمدند. گشتاسپ پس از این به سراسر ایران موبد فرستاد و آتشکدههایی ساخت که نخستین آنها آتشکدهی آذربرزین مهر بود. او سپس در کاشمر سروی کاشت و بر آن نوشت که گشتاسپ دین بِهی را پذیرفت و آن درخت را گواه قرار داد. پس از چندین سال که درخت تناور شد گشتاسپ کاخی در کنار آن ساخت و نگارهی جمشید و نیز فریدون با گرز گاوسار را بر آن کشید و بر دیوارهای آن گوهر نشاند. سپس بارویی آهنین دور آن درست کرد و آنجا را جایگاه خود ساخت و همهی بزرگان کشور را فراخواند و اینگونه با آنها تجدید پیمان کرد.
پس از مدتی زرتشت به پیش گشتاسپ گِلِه کرد که باج دادن به ارجاسپ، پادشاه چین و توران، شایستهی بهدینان نیست. پس گشتاسپ تصمیم گرفت که دیگر به ارجاسپ باج نپردازد و این آغاز جنگی دیگر میان ایران و توران بود که با دلاوریهای اسفندیار به نابودی ارجاسپ انجامید.

گوا کرد مر سروِ آزاد را

Zardhosht, the great prophet, emerges during the reign of King Goshtasp, bringing forth the divine faith of Behi (Zoroastrianism) to the monarch of Persia.
Upon his triumphant return from Rome, Goshtasp ascends to his throne, and Zardhosht approaches him. The king embraces Zardhosht’s teachings, leading noble figures, including the venerable Zarir and Lohrasp, to follow the holy path. In this newfound devotion, Goshtasp sends forth priests across the vast lands of Iran and erects fire temples, the first of which is the sacred shrine of Azarbarzin Mehr.
Subsequently, in the land of Kashmar, he plants a grand tree and inscribes upon it the words celebrating his acceptance of the Behi faith, declaring it as a witness. Years pass, and as the mighty tree flourishes, Goshtasp constructs a magnificent palace beside it, adorning its walls with depictions of the legendary Jamshid and the valiant Fereydoun wielding the mighty Bullheaded mace, embedding gems into its stone. An iron wall is raised around this sacred site, transforming it into his stronghold, where he summons all the nobility of the realm, renewing his oath with them.
As time unfolds, Zardhosht confronts Goshtasp, voicing concern that paying tribute to Arjaasp, the king of China and Turan, is unworthy of the righteous. Convinced, Goshtasp resolves to cease the tribute, marking the dawn of another fierce war between Iran and Turan, culminating in the valorous deeds of Esfandiyar and the ultimate downfall of Arjaasp.
